  1. Insert UK £ in a more logical place in the list of currencies on the job quote form.

In a drop-down list of currencies, British pounds usually comes under UK pounds, or British pounds, but not under 'pounds'. It was incredibly difficult to find just now and it almost stopped me from quoting on a job. The list is inconsistent because the list contains mostly countries.

  2. Encourage clients to be realistic about the quotes they can handle and to reply to translators.

We spend incredible amount of time reading posts, providing sample translations, preparing quotes and then, there is silence. 95% of clients show no courtesy to even thank you for your sample translations and your time. I understand that often clients don't have time to reply to all translators when they receive hundreds of quotes, so why don't ask clients to set a realistic limit for the quotes they will receive? What I mean is to ask clients to indicate how many quotes they will be able to handle per language. If they receive 70 quotes for Italian only and they…

  3. Create an escrow service so I can work with agencies without feedback in their Blueboard profile

I want to work with an agency but they have not built up Blueboard feedback yet. I find it very risky to work for them and not get paid. With an escrow service, the agency funds the escrow account for the job and release the sum when the job is delivered by the translator. If there is a problem, Proz.com mediates. There is a small fee for Proz.com deducted for this service. In this way, both client and translator are protected. It works the same as on Elance.

  5. Disable price/rate proposals by posters that are lower than what is suggested on ProZ.com's translation rate page

ProZ.com should prevent posters from posting budgets/rates/prices that are lower than the published minimum rates on the ProZ.com translation rate page, meaning if a poster tries to enter a rate, rate range, hourly rate or even total price which is clearly below the minimum prices on the translation rate page (for total price, a calculation scheme needs to be introduced that calculates the per-source-word equivalent), they cannot enter it. Warnings like the "The budget entered is lower than what 80% of translators charge" etc, are not strong enough to prevent people from simply accepting unprofessional and exploitative proposals. Every unprofessional…

  6. Search options for Member Directory: Please add 'Simultaneous Interpreting' option to Skills.

If you are searching for a simultaneous interpreter in the member directory, there is no way to tell 'ordinary' interpreters from simultaneous ones. Typically, you are swamped with irrelevant hits.

I would think this is a no-brainer rather than something to be voter over.

  7. Some sort of disciplinary measure to Proz members who quote below minimum community rates.

Unfair competition needs to stop at some point. There are several ideas proposing to set mandatory minimum rates, to delete jobs that offer below standard rates, etc...However, Proz mostly suggests that is up to us when answering to these concerns. So, I suggest that is up to Proz.com to apply some sort of measure to unfair members. For example, take some Kudoz points or Browniz out, place some kind of "mark" in the profile of unfair competitors (eg. "The Proz community disagrees with the rates of this professional"), etc. I know it sounds harsh, but this is a never-ending discussion…

  8. Don't send email confirming my quote has been received.

Every time I quote on a job, about 2 seconds after I am sent to your page telling me my quote has been sent I hear my email notifier telling me I have received an email - an email from ProZ telling me my quote has been received. Its a little redundant, a little frustrating and not very edifying. Seems to me there are better things you can use your/my bandwidth for.

Just a thought. Oh, and yes I checked all over the site including my settings/email preferences and there doesn't seem to be a way for me to choose…

  9. Separate WWA and LWA for interpreters and translators

I propose to separate the WWA for interpreters and translators, and if posible to add for both general fields and specific fields. For example if sombody is working as court interpreter, he does the interpreting for example in Law (general) and Patents (specific) or I could imagine that could be added even a more specific field so to inidcate for example Law (general) and criminal law (specific) and than murder (as exact theme). Another example if somebody does the interpreting in automotive (general field) and specific field (brake systems). What also could be useful that each interpreter can fill in…

  10. Create something like a BlueBoard (SampleBoard) where translators can provide feedback on the no. of free samples submitted

Many agencies keep on asking for free samples, some of them ask for even 800 words free samples using CAT tool. There should be a Board for agencies/outsourcers (just like your BlueBoard) where translators can submit the no. of free samples they submitted but never got a job.
This would save new translators from applying for another free sample. Translators should be able to enter the no. of free samples submitted (1, 2, etc.), word count, etc. in the Board. But, a translator would be eligible only if he submitted a free translation and did not get a job. It will…

  11. Create a platform where leave the samples translators and interpreters want to submit to potential clients

This would avoid the use of "samples" which look like a true work (for free).

  12. Create a fair system to establish the lowest per word rate everyone may accept in order to remove insulting rates at all.

We often have to decline interesting jobs because the rates are insulting for our profession. This is an old and long speech we, translators and interpreters, hold the only answer: saying NO.
But, there must be something like an Ethical Rate Code to establish the lowest per word/character rate every linguistic, whenever he or she lives could read in order to fully understand how important this work is. I don't want to keep on reading rates like "$0.01/source word for English into Spanish legal field translation" anymore. Or explanations at so like "We have to be competitive". I truly believe…

  13. Separate language directions in the directory

If you are looking for interpreters into Italian for example, the list of interpreters displayed includes interpreters who only work from Italian and not vice versa. This is misleading and harms those who really have the qualification to quote for the specific job. The announcement thus leaks to the wrong direction and I have seen colleagues displayed in the directory as individuals but who own agencies pass the proz com jobs to their partners.

  14. Add "European Union" and "European Affairs" as a field of specialization

Translation for the EU are of a very particular type and definitely call for their own category.

  17. Let non-members compose their quote for jobs at any moment.

Let non-members compose their quote for jobs at any moment.
The system should send it automatically to the client after the "members only" deadline.

  19. require job posters to indicate the subject area for the translation in the post's title.

The subject is found at the end of the quote and can only be seen after you've opened the proposal and scanned for it.

I actually use this omission in the title and proposal as a diagnostic for whether I'm dealing with a professional outfit or not.

  20. Feedback when a quote is declined

I'm sure I'm not the first to think about this, and therefore it might have been rejected for reasons I cannot imagine right now, but I find that asking an outsourcer to provide an reason for declining a quote would be helpful in order to submit better quotes, even if it's only one of a few choices in a radio button list.
